Who decides the fate of higher education in India? The HRD minister? Respective governors of various states? No. Its the Babus with a big B. Thats the civil (servants) masters of the country. Of late, espacially during 80's and 90's, lots of IITians joined the coveted CS in India. Now most of them are heading various central and state departments, including higher education. Now for them higher education means only engineering education. And engineering education means IITs. So rest is useless hence don't deserve any respect or attention. So the university system is deliberately being left to a slow death. Those who study humanities or other traditional subjects are useless people. And teachers? Hah, they sit on their fat bums doing nothing and getting salaries equalling bada babus? How outrageous!!Remember, the recent years VC appointments in UP. Last Govnr. openly and blatantly said that he would appoint only IIT professors as VCs in UP universities. Now if u think that our Great IIT professors prefer academics over administration, u are grossly mistaken. The result? In UP Universities U have many IIT professors spending their retirement. And what thry r promising? well the 1st promise is that they would make the place like IITs with more emphasis on R&D. Next they want standardisation of everything (something they probably missed at IITs) so they want all exams on OMR sheets!! and all evaluations should be done by computers!! why? because teachers make mistakes and make a lot of money in the process. University teachers? hah why should they earn any thing extra? arent they already proven guilty of malpractices in evaluation process?
Should they get salary arrears? hell no!! havent they alreadygot the new pay scale? what about HRA then? hey again u r going wrong. it will be delayed till there comes big pressure. Not without begging.
SO the IITan bureaucrat tells the IITian VC, "dont worry sir, we will make sure the University teachers keep suffering.
